We are all becoming twitterpated over here on the farm with the warm weather February brought, and the refreshing rain of March. What is it they say? In like a lion, out like a lamb? How green and glorious April shall be!

The children have been out digging in the tilled earth, watching the “wild” arugula grow – self seeding for the third year in a row – and getting excited with the thought of apricots as the trees fill with the beautiful sight and heavenly sent of blossoms. What do we hear? The buzzing of the bees!

Tramping around espying new growth to take pictures of, we found some yellow rudbeckias – also known as cone flowers or, as I grew up with, brown eyed Susans – blooming amongst last years brown, dried flower bed. Jacob is surprised to see these flowers already peeping out, usually not appearing until April or May. He speculates this is due to the fact that they are perennials well established, as we have had these flower beds for four years now.

The garlics planted in November are thriving in their beds of cow manure, and we are all looking forward to the harvest in late May or early June. Garlic in everything! Bring on the bite! Though our six year old may not appreciate it as much as Mother.

Robust garlic plants… no weeds!

As we can see, life is growing on the farm. Now we need to stock up on our seedlings and get some cold-hardy brassicas in the ground such as cauliflower, broccoli, kohlrabi, and kale. Peas also do alright at this time of year though they can be direct seeded no problem.

Be well, and may your seedlings grow towards the light!
